Japanese Foliage
I created these designs after being inspired by Japanese-style prints. Here’s a few examples of how I’ve used the designs from the Japanese Foliage Set. You will find download instructions for the Brushes, Illustrator Vector Art, and PNGs below the images.

There are 30 Brushes in this set. This set is available for $14.99 The brushes work with Photoshop CS and above. Anything before CS will require using the PNG files below.

The original vector files for this set are available for $12.99. You must have vector editing software (such as Adobe Illustrator, or Macromedia Freehand) to edit this file. Included in this download is an AI, and an EPS file compatible with Adobe Illustrator version 8 and above.

For those of you using earlier versions of Photoshop or other editing software I offer a nicely zipped file of all 30 PNG files from this set. This set is available for $14.99

[...] Jason Gaylor from ‘Designfruit‘ has posted some really gorgeous brushes, Japanese style. Okay, Japan is not China, but near enough. Anyway, grab them here while you can. I have Elements…can I use these brushes?
January 18th, 2007 at 3:39 pm
Megan, you can try. If they don’t work you should be able to open the png files and convert them to brushes 1 by 1. I don’t know elements, but I assume they have brushes. I don’t know for sure if this is correct, but I’m thinking you could do it like this:
1. Open one of the PNG files in Elements
2. Choose Edit > Define Brush Preset
3. Then you will have a new brush in your brushes palate
January 18th, 2007 at 4:49 pm
These are great, fantastic work once again. I did a post about this on my blog to spread the word-
http://www.neublack.com/art-design/359
January 18th, 2007 at 5:27 pm
Megan~ i’m using Elements for now and the work just fine putting the abr file into hte preset/Brush file then open up Elements and it should be in your pull down window. All that to say I’m using 4.0 on a Mac… But I’d assume anything higher would support brushes. HTH

Sarit,
Thanks for bringing this to my attention. I tried to download the PNGs as well and had a problem extracting the zip file. Sometimes it’s a matter of making sure they are completely downloaded before trying to unzip the file, but I think there was simply a corruption in the file this time. I’ve since uploaded a new version of the PNGs. Hopefully this will solve the problem. Let me know if there are any further problems with them. Thanks everyone!

Jason, your brushes and art are incredible ! Just purchased the japanese foliage for Illustrator, as well as your brushes. As a newbie to CS2, i wondered what the difference is on the use of the ( PS) brushes in Illustrator ? Is that not possible, which is why the vectors are used in Illustrator instead.
Keep up the great work !

First off these are great and so beautiful! I downloaded your photoshop brushes and when i tried to open the file, it wouldn’t work, and now whenever I try to open photoshop, illustrator, or indesign I get messages about how i have to reinstall my creative suite to open the program. I have never had problems like this, so I think it is related to your brushes, and if it is, I thought you should know. Hopefully I can figure this out, and still use your brushes because I think they really are beautiful.
March 3rd, 2007 at 9:26 pm
Thank you everyone for the nice comments. I believe I have responded to most of the questions through email. If I have missed you please feel free to contact me at jgaylor at designfruit dot com.
Eija, this is the first I’ve heard of this particular thing, and I get quite a few downloads of the brushes. I’m not discounting the possibility that something became corrupt and affected your computer, and I apologize if something of this nature happend. There is nothing fancy about the files, they are simply zipped up brushes, vectors, ect… Sorry for your trouble, I hope this doesn’t happen to anyone else.

Hi
I am leaving a massage to ask some thing about your product. Actually, I downloaded free brushes and tried to use it, but I just got this massage ,
“Could not load the brushes because the file is not compatible with this version of Photoshop.” from my photoshop 7.0. I followed this order when I tried to open the free brushes : computer -(C:) - Program Files - Adobe - Photoshop 7.0- Presets - Brushes
Can you explain how I can handle it and let me try your good stuff? I will wait for your e-mail. Thank you

Some answers to some recent questions…
QUESTION: Heavenremix Says: Hi, I really love these PS burshes
Can I use them for school porject poster?
its not for sale or anything , just for school presentation.
and I will cedit you by mention your name on my project website , is that ok?”
ANSWER: Heavenremix, Yes you can. Thanks for asking
QUESTION: Jeon Says: Hi, I am leaving a massage to ask some thing about your product. Actually, I downloaded free brushes and tried to use it, but I just got this massage ,

ANSWER: Jeon, the brushes are not compatible with Photoshop 7.0. Only CS versions. Alternatively you can use the PNG files and create your own brushes from them. There are many tutorials online for making photoshop brushes. Essentially they will be the same as the ones I’ve created, but will be compatible with your version of photoshop. You can also purchase the Vector files if you use any vector editing software.

ANSWER: Marlene, I’m not sure I quite understand this request, but I think you are having difficulties because of a compatibility issue. The brushes are not compatible with Photoshop 7.0. Only CS versions. Alternatively you can use the PNG files and create your own brushes from them. There are many tutorials online for making photoshop brushes. Ah, they look beautiful. I tried to install them but they said they don’t work wiht my version of Photoshop (7.0). :( Am I doing something wrong? I’m still kinda new to Photoshop.
March 14th, 2007 at 1:23 am
Yay, I got them to work! They’re beautiful! Great work! :D
March 14th, 2007 at 7:09 am
Zack, looks like you worked it out. Thanks.
March 15th, 2007 at 3:50 am
How do you change the color? Mine are all black.
March 15th, 2007 at 6:09 am
Eric, the color of the brushes is based on the color you choose in photoshop. If you’re painting with red, then the brushes will be red. If you’re painting with black, the brushes will be black. Does this help?

I’ve reinterpreted your first example image because I wanted to use it as a widescreen background wallpaper. They are on deviantArt, under a Creative Commons license. I hope this doesn’t infringe on your Terms of Use. I looked them over, and I don’t think so, but in retrospect, I’d like to make sure.

I really appreciate these beautiful brushes. My daughter-through-marriage is Japanese. I have a picture of her coming of age in traditional kimono, etc., dress & will use these brushes to make the accessories to scrap her photo. The folliage is awesome & will complement any layout. Again, thanks.

I’ve posted already but when I found out that I couldn’t get them to work in PS7 I thought I MUST HAVE so I bought the vectors.
I am still a total eejit. This could also be because my AI10 is the french version but I cannot figure out how pull the vectors into the forms/brushes palette.
Could you just tell me what you would have to do in AI10 [English]? I should be able to figure it out from there for the soft I have.
Thanks a million.
Really.

These Japanese Foliage brushes are fabulous. I’d really like to use them in creating some ditigal scrapbook pages that would be offered for sale. I’m unclear about the terms of use here and what a purchased licence would allow for? Once a paper is offered for sale I would have no control over how many times that paper was purchased and used. If you could clarify this for me, it would be great. Thanks very much.

Hi amazing brushes but im finding it hard to open them. I have the photoshop CS middle eastern version which is version 8 but when i click ‘load brushes’ and then navigate to the correct folder, the brushes are not there! When i open the folder their in, the brushes are not photoshop files, but look like files with zips in them. Apologies for the essay but any ideas?

I just found your brushes and may I say I was just blown away. The minute I saw them my mind went crazy thinking of all the things I can do. They are gorgeous. I have a question….I belong to a scrapbook group….NOT YAHOO…NEVER…..I don’t like the way they share stuff they shouldn’t. Thjis is just a group of women who do digital scrapping. We create things for each other to use. WE NEVER EVER sell EVER and they are less than 100 of us. My question about usage is…..May I use your designs to make backgrounds that the other ladies will create Lay outs from. I would of course credit you and put a link in the TOU directing them back to your site. I would appreciate knowing this as I don’t want to do anything wrong
