Fresh Foliage Photoshop Brushes for High Resolution [Part I]
I decided it was time to create some more brushes. Hopefully these will warm you from the inside during these cold winter months (its cold where I am).
These brushes are big, and meant for print. You can use them for Web stuff as well, but you might need to size them down. Most of them are around 1800 pixels wide. Here’s a few examples from the Fresh Foliage [Part I] Set:

My Brushes Work with many versions of Photoshop
Anything before CS will require downloading the layers file. Keep reading.
Download Instructions
1. Download the brushes here (13.5 MB)
2. Select the paint brush in the Photoshop tools.
3. From the brushes palette choose “Load brushes…”
4. Navigate to your brand new brushes and happy times begin.
Layers For Photoshop 7
If you’re using version 7, you won’t be able to use these brushes. However, you can download the layers file here [Part I] Each brush has been stamped on a seperate layer.
Defining Your Own Brushes
If you’d like to convert these into brushes, it’s easy. Simply turn on one of the layers and go to edit>define brushes. After this, your brush will appear in the brushes pallete. If you need more information on making your own there are plenty of resources out there. Try a quick search on google, or look in the photoshop help for “defining a brush.”

I think it’s similar across all the photoshop versions, but making a brush is quite simple.
1. Open an image and make sure that it is 2400 pixels or less in height and width. Photoshop doesn’t currently allow brushes to be bigger than that, so the option will be grayed out if you try to define a brush that is too big.
2. Go to edit>define brush preset
You can then type a name for the brush and then click “Okay”
3. Now if you open the brushes pallete, you will find the brush you just created at the appended to the bottom of the list. From there you can select the brush and use it. Make sure you have selected the brush tool in the tool bar or you will not be able to select your new brush.

I created some of the flower images in illustrator after studying about 150 photos of branches, trees, flowers, etc. that I took. Winter time is good for this because there is a lot of space between branches and buds and makes it easier to see when you convert it to black and white. It took me a while to figure out the best angles for the branches and things.
Then I took the photos into photoshop and boosted the contrast and adjusted various filters until I got the image that I wanted. Then I combined the brushes that I made to make new ones. My original goal was to combine the true organic look with something that was so clean that it couldn’t be organic. I love the contrast of what the two look like together. What I ended up with is my illustrator artwork and my filtered photos all combined into one stamp.
To answer your question, I created the brushes from nature, memory, my photograpy, some craftsmanship, and a little inspiration.

3. Have you ever considered shooting wedding pictures? These are just so gorgeous! Do you allow any commercial use with these? I make papers and would love to use them if possible. Excuse my ignorance if its stated somewhere here!

Hi there - I love your brushes and I’m hoping you can help with a problem I’m having. I have photoshop 7 so I downloaded the layer set, but I only get image 2 of the 3 shown. I really want image number one - how can I get that one?

Bro…you make the best brushes. email me so we can chat and exchange ideas. i have a few tricks up my sleeve you might be interested in incorporating into your next set. I use your brushes for quite a few things on my site…check out concerts…then third day…also petapalooza2006….the rebel yell section of my site…and the underground lounge section with switchfoot.

Have you checked out an artist named Ryan McGinness? A lot that work reminds me of his. Check it out if you get the chance. oh by the way, I think your work is really great.
