Japanese Foliage
I created these designs after being inspired by Japanese-style prints. Here are a few examples of how I’ve used the designs from the Japanese Foliage Set. You will find download instructions for the Brushes, Illustrator Vector Art, and PNGs below the images.

There are 30 Brushes in this set. This set is available for $12 The brushes work with Photoshop CS and above. Anything before CS will require using the PNG files below.

The original vector files for this set are available for $12. You must have vector editing software (such as Adobe Illustrator, or Macromedia Freehand) to edit this file. Included in this download is an EPS file compatible with Adobe Illustrator version 10 and above.

Thanks for keeping these brushes free for designers!
Good luck with the extended licensing program.
I hope to ever get a chance or creative outlet to use these sugar babies…
18/01/2007 at 12:02 pm Permalink
Thanks for using them. Extended licensing is working well so far. I depend on the fans to keep an eye out for illegal usage. Thanks to everyone who has pointed out suspicious usage and stock sites with my brush designs for sale.
18/01/2007 at 3:03 pm Permalink
Really nice work, thanks 4 the sharing from Bolivia!!
18/01/2007 at 3:04 pm Permalink
I have Elements…can I use these brushes?
18/01/2007 at 3:39 pm Permalink
Megan, you can try. If they don’t work you should be able to open the png files and convert them to brushes 1 by 1. I don’t know elements, but I assume they have brushes. I don’t know for sure if this is correct, but I’m thinking you could do it like this:
1. Open one of the PNG files in Elements
2. Choose Edit > Define Brush Preset
3. Then you will have a new brush in your brushes palate
18/01/2007 at 4:49 pm Permalink
These are great, fantastic work once again. I did a post about this on my blog to spread the word-
http://www.neublack.com/art-design/359
18/01/2007 at 5:27 pm Permalink
Megan~ i’m using Elements for now and the work just fine putting the abr file into hte preset/Brush file then open up Elements and it should be in your pull down window. All that to say I’m using 4.0 on a Mac… But I’d assume anything higher would support brushes. HTH
18/01/2007 at 5:36 pm Permalink
Thanks Melibelle. sounds like you know more about it than i do.
18/01/2007 at 9:00 pm Permalink
No, no, Jason thank YOU!
These are so lovely. It’s almost a sin that you’re just giving these away. Almost! (wink wink).
But seriously – stunning, thank you.

Oh wow. I am just wowed by these beauties. I love japanese theme. And so nice that you amde png files of them too. You are so generous and talented. Love your work!
19/01/2007 at 1:08 am Permalink
it’s not that imressive to know more about stupid elements… oh I can’t wait for the day I have the real thing!!!
19/01/2007 at 9:35 am Permalink
I read the Terms of Use but correct before I’m doing something wrong – I would like to use the brushes in the future to create WP themes distributed by me – but not for sale, but for free.
Will that be ok?
PS- I would love to see some downloadable WP themes from you. You’re obviously very talented :)
19/01/2007 at 11:14 am Permalink
It is okay to use the brushes in WP themes not for re-sale. Thanks for asking.

Those are really beautiful.
I would love to read or see a bit of description about how you went about making or designing those. I’ve tried several times to do similar patterns in Illustrator but can’t get the vectors to “flow” anywhere near this nicely.

20/01/2007 at 3:16 pm Permalink
Sarit,
Thanks for bringing this to my attention. I tried to download the PNGs as well and had a problem extracting the zip file. Sometimes it’s a matter of making sure they are completely downloaded before trying to unzip the file, but I think there was simply a corruption in the file this time. I’ve since uploaded a new version of the PNGs. Hopefully this will solve the problem. Let me know if there are any further problems with them. Thanks everyone!

Just making sure that you know that your brushes are being re-sold on a digital scrapbooking website. If you already know, then other people who like the tattoo brushes should check this out, it’s a pretty cool digital kit. http://ndisb.com/store/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=772

Nice work. I do hope you realise that’s very easy to live trace them to get the vector stuff :)
28/01/2007 at 5:13 pm Permalink
Cristian, perhaps it is, but the vector stuff has the complete pieces of original artwork. The photoshop brushes are flattened layers of cropped images from the original set. So I see what you’re saying but you’re misunderstaning what the vector set is.

Sigh.

JChevais,
They don’t work with 7. You will have to use the PNG files and create your own brushes from them.

I have a question. I read your terms of use and I would like to know whether using these brushes in designing a high school magazine/yearbook is allowed. I would appreciate a reply very much and hope to see more of your talent soon.
13/02/2007 at 9:25 am Permalink
JGaylor,
That’s actually what i don’t understand how to do. I opened the png in PS7 and PS7 won’t let me upload them/charge them/whatever and I was wondering if there is an added “thing” I have to do or whether I’ll just have to give up.
Thanks for taking the time to respond tho.
Cheers.

Jason, your brushes and art are incredible ! Just purchased the japanese foliage for Illustrator, as well as your brushes. As a newbie to CS2, i wondered what the difference is on the use of the ( PS) brushes in Illustrator ? Is that not possible, which is why the vectors are used in Illustrator instead.
Keep up the great work !

First off these are great and so beautiful! I downloaded your photoshop brushes and when i tried to open the file, it wouldn’t work, and now whenever I try to open photoshop, illustrator, or indesign I get messages about how i have to reinstall my creative suite to open the program. I have never had problems like this, so I think it is related to your brushes, and if it is, I thought you should know. Hopefully I can figure this out, and still use your brushes because I think they really are beautiful.
03/03/2007 at 9:26 pm Permalink
Thank you everyone for the nice comments. I believe I have responded to most of the questions through email. If I have missed you please feel free to contact me at jgaylor at designfruit dot com.
Eija, this is the first I’ve heard of this particular thing, and I get quite a few downloads of the brushes. I’m not discounting the possibility that something became corrupt and affected your computer, and I apologize if something of this nature happend. There is nothing fancy about the files, they are simply zipped up brushes, vectors, ect… Sorry for your trouble, I hope this doesn’t happen to anyone else.

“Could not load the brushes because the file is not compatible with this version of Photoshop.” from my photoshop 7.0. I followed this order when I tried to open the free brushes : computer -(C:) – Program Files – Adobe – Photoshop 7.0- Presets – Brushes
Can you explain how I can handle it and let me try your good stuff? I will wait for your e-mail. Thank you

QUESTION: Heavenremix Says: Hi, I really love these PS burshes

ANSWER: Heavenremix, Yes you can. Thanks for asking
QUESTION: Jeon Says: Hi, I am leaving a massage to ask some thing about your product. Actually, I downloaded free brushes and tried to use it, but I just got this massage ,
“Could not load the brushes because the file is not compatible with this version of Photoshop.†from my photoshop 7.0. ANSWER: Jeon, the brushes are not compatible with Photoshop 7.0. Only CS versions. Alternatively you can use the PNG files and create your own brushes from them. There are many tutorials online for making photoshop brushes. Essentially they will be the same as the ones I’ve created, but will be compatible with your version of photoshop. You can also purchase the Vector files if you use any vector editing software.

ANSWER: Marlene, I’m not sure I quite understand this request, but I think you are having difficulties because of a compatibility issue. The brushes are not compatible with Photoshop 7.0. Only CS versions. Alternatively you can use the PNG files and create your own brushes from them. There are many tutorials online for making photoshop brushes. Thanks Landon.
13/03/2007 at 9:26 pm Permalink
Ah, they look beautiful. I tried to install them but they said they don’t work wiht my version of Photoshop (7.0). :( Am I doing something wrong? I’m still kinda new to Photoshop.
14/03/2007 at 1:23 am Permalink
Yay, I got them to work! They’re beautiful! Great work! :D
14/03/2007 at 7:09 am Permalink
Zack, looks like you worked it out. Thanks.
15/03/2007 at 3:50 am Permalink
How do you change the color? Mine are all black.
15/03/2007 at 6:09 am Permalink
Eric, the color of the brushes is based on the color you choose in photoshop. If you’re painting with red, then the brushes will be red. If you’re painting with black, the brushes will be black. Does this help?
21/03/2007 at 6:26 pm Permalink
So how do I get these brushes to work on Adobe 7.0?
I’m so lost. Someone help me please. Thanks =)
22/03/2007 at 8:47 am Permalink
Dennis,
The brushes are not compatible with Photoshop 7.0. Only CS versions. Alternatively you can use the PNG files and create your own brushes from them. There are many tutorials online for making photoshop brushes. Essentially the end result will be the same as the brushes I’ve created, but will be compatible with your version of photoshop. You can also purchase the Vector files if you use any vector editing software.

I’ve reinterpreted your first example image because I wanted to use it as a widescreen background wallpaper. They are on deviantArt, under a Creative Commons license. I hope this doesn’t infringe on your Terms of Use. I looked them over, and I don’t think so, but in retrospect, I’d like to make sure.

I’ve posted already but when I found out that I couldn’t get them to work in PS7 I thought I MUST HAVE so I bought the vectors.
I am still a total eejit. This could also be because my AI10 is the french version but I cannot figure out how pull the vectors into the forms/brushes palette.
Could you just tell me what you would have to do in AI10 [English]? I should be able to figure it out from there for the soft I have.
Thanks a million.
Really.

These Japanese Foliage brushes are fabulous. I’d really like to use them in creating some ditigal scrapbook pages that would be offered for sale. I’m unclear about the terms of use here and what a purchased licence would allow for? Once a paper is offered for sale I would have no control over how many times that paper was purchased and used. If you could clarify this for me, it would be great. Thanks very much.

Hi amazing brushes but im finding it hard to open them. I have the photoshop CS middle eastern version which is version 8 but when i click ‘load brushes’ and then navigate to the correct folder, the brushes are not there! When i open the folder their in, the brushes are not photoshop files, but look like files with zips in them. Apologies for the essay but any ideas?

I just found your brushes and may I say I was just blown away. The minute I saw them my mind went crazy thinking of all the things I can do. They are gorgeous. I have a question….I belong to a scrapbook group….NOT YAHOO…NEVER…..I don’t like the way they share stuff they shouldn’t. Thjis is just a group of women who do digital scrapping. We create things for each other to use. WE NEVER EVER sell EVER and they are less than 100 of us. My question about usage is…..May I use your designs to make backgrounds that the other ladies will create Lay outs from. I would of course credit you and put a link in the TOU directing them back to your site. I would appreciate knowing this as I don’t want to do anything wrong

How do I get the brushes onto Photoshop once I download them? I have CS3. Do I load them like an action? Also, when I download the FREE 30 brushes, all I get is one, not 30. What am I doing wrong? What is the difference in “run” & “save”? When I extracted the files, it told me it could not “load the brushes because the file is not compatible with this version of Photoshop” though what I have is the new updated version CS3. It also told me it “could not complete my request because it is not the right kind of document”. If I need to purchase something, let me know but the website said “free” so that’s what I was going on. Thanks for the help…from anyone. If you prefer to email me privately, it’s bjtm222@sbcglobal.net.

These are soooo beautiful. You are incredibly talented. Is it alright if I use them to help along with some design materials I am creating for conferences and events? Have you ever thought about creating these with Maori NZ designs? I would be keen on them too.

Hi Jason
dude … really really amazing set of brushes. Could you advise me about something … is there a market for “Animated Floral Brushes” – if there is do you think we could do a collaborative effort to bring it to the world ?
BTW i am a motion gfx designer and i believe i can animate these brushes of your’s growing and forming the final shape. Ps do get in touch. my email add is…. arfan5@hotmail.com

They must be loaded inside photoshop.
First, unzip files in a folder of your choice!
In Photoshop:
1. Klick the Brush icon in your toolbar.
2. Then, in your propertys toolbar (brush, mode, opacity, flow etc) klick “Brush preset picker”.
3. Klick on the little arrow top right and choose “Load brushes”.
4. Enjoy :)

First off: Wow… some truly amazing stuff you did here…
Second: I am still not quite sure about the TOU. I would like to use some of your foliage in a logo for my wife’s business (local wedding coaching) and possibly in a couple of places on her website. So I guess you could consider the use “for profit”. However, there is no re-selling.
Before I go any further with the design, I want to check: Do I need a license (or is a donation “good” enough)?
Again, great work…

I’m amazed. :)
Thank you for making available all this files.
I give link to your site at my work comments.

I have a question much like Stefan…
One of your brushes is in my logo. (a friend created it) I am just now aware that it is your brush and I am hoping I can still use it. :O(
I e-mailed you about licensing the brush but haven’t received a response…
I am a photographer so I guess the site is for profit but I’m not really selling the *brush* even though it is a part of my logo.
All your work is amazing… you’re very talented!
Please let me know your thoughts on it :O)
